Safer and Vulnerable 30 Hour Value Package
General
Our most popular Course for Learner drivers. Bookings are always filling fast so be quick to book as spaces are limited. Participants can now choose to combine both the ACT Safer Driver Course and the ACT Vulnerable Road User Program into a single workshop which can be completed in a single online session of four and a half hours (Sundays 10am to 2.30pm. This will be followed by the Safer Driver Course Part Two practical component (drive) which will be arranged between the student and the Accredited Driving Instructor for a time convenient to both. Part Two (practical drive) will be completed within a few days of finishing Part One of the Course should the student require. No more hanging around and trying to book in your practical drive!
The second part, the practical drive, unlike other Providers, will be conducted between an Accredited ACT Instructor and yourself only. You will not be sharing the vehicle, during the practical drive, with other students. We have decided that this is the best way to go during these uncertain times.
Also, choosing to do both of these together, participants can save $30 and receive 30HOURS towards their required driving hours. Please note, We are only doing online courses at the moment. We will open up “Classroom Face-to-Face Courses” further down the track, when Covid restrictions are relaxed. The Combo Course is available every Sunday morning at 10am, and now, due to popular demand, selected Thursday evenings.

Online Courses Using Zoom
What are my requirements if I choose to do a Course online ?
Download the free ZOOM app here: https://www.zoom.us/download
IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ:
WHEN BOOKING A COURSE, PLEASE MAKE SURE PAYMENT IS MADE AT THE TIME OF BOOKING, OTHERWISE THE SYSTEM WILL AUTOMATICALLY DELETE YOUR BOOKING AFTER TEN MINUTES. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT SOMETIMES STUDENTS BOOK A TEMPORARY SPACE AND THEN FORGET TO PAY, (OR INTEND TO PAY LATER, BUT FORGET), WHICH LEAVES ONE LESS SPOT FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO ATTEND THE CLASS.
When you book for the Pre-Learner Licence Course, you will be required to complete it over TWO CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS. All our Pre-Learner Licence Courses, at present, are run weekly, on a Monday 5pm to 10pm (Part One) and the next night, Tuesday 5pm to 10pm (Part Two) or Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm for your convenience (during certain times). Shortly after booking, you will receive email confirmation on booking and payment. The email will only mention the Monday (Part One) but will also cover your booking for the Tuesday (Part Two) session as well. You will need to complete both consecutive nights online, as well as successfully completing the Road Rules Knowledge Test, to pass the Course. Note: We will be running extra Pre-Learner Licence Courses during School Holidays.
You will need a desktop computer (preferred) or a Laptop, iPad, an iPhone, with a built-in camera. We will send you more details about the Knowledge Test by email. We will also email your Student Workbook and other Course materials to you the same day you sign up for the Course.
Before your Course date, usually the night before, we will send you a ZOOM link which you can then use to join the class.
During the workshop you will need to be aware of external noise. You may mute your microphone at any time but please be considerate of others in the group who are there to study and complete the course. Once you start a course, you must finish to be eligible for the certificate. The Course is both fun and very informative!
Making Our Roads Safer For New Drivers
Our new and young drivers are over-represented in road crashes. To make our roads safer for new drivers a range of changes have been made, which apply to all learner and provisional licences issued or renewed from 1 January 2020. Some of the changes include:
- Required driving hours for learners:
- If you are under 25 when you are issued with your learner licence you must undertake a minimum of 100 supervised driving hours, including a minimum of 10 hours at night-time.
- If you are 25 or older when issued with your learner licence you must undertake a minimum of 50 supervised driving hours, including a minimum of five hours at night-time.
- Introduction of a mandatory Hazard Perception Test.
- Introduction of a two staged provisional licence:
- A red P plate for the first 12 months (P1) with late night peer passenger restrictions.
- A green P plate for the remaining two years (P2). If you are 25 or older when you are issued with your provisional licence, you will be a P2 for the entire three-year provisional licence period.
- Reduced demerit point threshold for learner drivers from 12 points to four points.
- A provisional driver will no longer be able to increase their demerit point threshold or be exempt from displaying P-Plates.

Safer Driver Course
Please note, this Course is scheduled to run once a month on a Thursday evening online from 6pm to 8.30pm (check available dates on the booking calendar). Part Two (the practical driving with an Accredited Instructor) will be arranged following completion of Part one. This will take place within a few days of completing Part One. You can choose to do the “COMBO COURSE” (see above) which includes the Safer Driver Course and will give you 30 HOURS towards your required hours.
Why is there a Safer Driver Course?
– Research has shown that young drivers are at greatest risk of crashing in the first six months of independent driving. Younger drivers in the ACT (aged 15-29 years) remain disproportionately represented in casualties, being 35% of all vehicle controller casualties, but only 24% of licence holders. Please note, we are only doing online courses at the moment. We will open up “Classroom Face-to-Face Courses” further down the track, when Covid restrictions are relaxed.
– This course builds your awareness of safe driving behaviours and attitudes that lead to better resilience and low risk driving choices. This will help you become a safer driver as you progress to a provisional licence and independent driving.
– The sessions are designed to be interactive and engaging. You need to participate in all the activities and discussions to get the most out of this course.
– Successful completion of this course counts as 20 of your required driving hours.
Purpose
– This workshop will help you to develop a better understanding of safe driving, which in turn helps you develop safer driving behaviours.
– While it’s critical that you build technical driving skills, your attitude when driving is also very important.
– This workshop will explore your risks as a young driver and help you develop strategies to become a safer driver.
Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will:
– understand that you’re at the highest risk of crashing when you first transition from supervised to independent driving.
– understand that you can reduce your risk of crashing by adopting safe driving behaviours, minimising risk taking, and making low risk on-road decisions.
– understand your vulnerabilities and the relationship between typical poor novice driving behaviours (such as following behaviour, gap selection, hazard perception, speed selection and distraction) and increased crash risk.
– understand and build resilience to the effect that peer influence and passenger behaviour can have on crash risks.
-develop strategies to address risks such as driving at night, drugs and alcohol, and general lifestyle pressures that can lead to speeding, driver distraction and fatigue.
Eligibility to participate
All participants must have held their Learner Licence for a period of at least THREE MONTHS. Your Learner Licence must show that you were under the age of 25 at the time it was issues (or renewed).
How much driving experience should I have before taking this Course ?

The second part, the practical drive, unlike other Providers, will be conducted between an Accredited ACT Instructor and yourself only. You will not be sharing the vehicle, during the practical drive, with other students, unlike most other Providers. We have decided that this is the best way to go during these uncertain times. The objective of this Course is to reduce the risk of participants being involved in an accident, before graduating to their P-Plates, by observing, then practicing low-risk driving techniques.
What are my requirements in order to complete the Course ?
Two things: a) active participation in the Course and b) completion of the practical driving session within a 30-day period of completing the workshop. We aim to complete Part two within a few days of completing the Workshop if convenient to both parties.
I have difficulty reading or speaking or understanding English, or using a computer, can you help ?

Vulnerable Road User Program
The Program
Please note this Course is scheduled to run once a week on a Sunday morning online from 8.30am to 10am. Check available dates on the booking calendar.
The Vulnerable Road User Program is available for any learner driver. The VRU Program is designed to engage with new drivers to give them greater insight, awareness and respect for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians to reduce the risk of harm to these vulnerable road users. These road users are vulnerable because they do not benefit from the level of crash protection other vehicles have and therefore are at a higher risk of being injured or killed in a road crash. Drivers of cars or larger vehicles are often the greatest risk to VRUs. Please note, we are only doing online courses at the moment. We will open up “Classroom Face-to-Face Courses” further down the track, when Covid restrictions are relaxed.
Motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians are all legitimate road users and have the same rights and responsibilities for using the road as motorists. As more Canberrans choose active travel options, we are not only improving health and wellbeing but also promoting sustainable transport. It is important that we recognise the role that these road users play in improving congestion on our roads and improving road safety in the ACT. In simple terms, the less we have people driving, the fewer crashes that will occur. If just 10% of Canberrans changed to non-car transport modes, we could expect to see dramatic decreases in the number of crashes on ACT roads.
VRUs remain overrepresented in road user casualty figures, which includes injuries and fatalities as a result of crashes. Over the last 10 years, there has been an average of 630 serious injuries and ten fatalities on ACT roads each year. Of these, VRUs have represented 40% of all casualties. This program will greatly increase your awareness of other road users and help make you a more considerate driver. Successful completion of the program will provide 10 hours towards the required driving hours.
Eligibility to participate
All participants must have held their Learner Licence for a period of at least THREE MONTHS.
Do I need to do anything before arriving at the workshop ?
Yes ! You must complete the one-hour workbook( we will send this to you) and bring it with you to the Course. You can download the workbook by clicking here.
What can I expect ?
The Vulnerable Road User Program includes both a component of self-directed learning (completed before arriving for the Program) and a two-hour workshop, which includes both theory and practical components.
What are my requirements in order to complete the Course ?
Two things: a) active participation in the workshop and b) completion of the self-directed learning component prior to attending the workshop.
I have difficulty reading or speaking or understanding English, or using a computer, can you help ?
Yes, we can. You can email us to book a special test. Please give us at least three days notice to arrange this.
What do I do after successfully completing the Course ?
